About Mapping Memories

Design Evening is a creative space for solving problems through design thinking, imagination, and creativity.

The Mapping Memories design evening will focus on creating an immersive experience for anyone to be able to tell a story and find out more about the histories that surround them.

Mapping Memories is an open source solution that is currently in the design & planning stage. The goal of the product will be to allow anyone to create, curate, and tag content with a place & a time. This in turn will facilitate a story about a place in time.

  • 3:15 – 3:45: Group brainstorm about ideas to include
  • 3:45 – 4:30: Iterate Round: Break into groups: collaborate & iterate sketches
  • 4:30 – 5:30: Feedback: Share ideas, converge on a single idea
  • 5:30 – 5:45: Finalize & document idea
  • 5:45 – 6:00: Conclusions / taking the project forward

Persona

Anyone who is curious about a time & place in history.

Design Challenge

How does one connect the dots between various assets (video, audio, photos etc) that are associated with a time and a place that tells a story and allows one to imagine themselves there – a virtual time machine.

The design needs to be easily understood and engaging. It should create evangelists who spread the word about the stories they have heard and inspire people to contribute.

Resources

Here are some similar projects that could help.

Workshop

Sandeep Dev, Creative Head at 17dNorth will spend 1/2 an hour discussing various ideas and strategies on how to approach logo design, formulate a plan, and create a beautiful end solution. He’ll take one of their projects as a case study to illustrate the design process 17dNorth uses.

How to prepare

The logos

The goal is to create some initial ideas and proposals for two logos.

Design Evening

  • Brand: Design Evenings is a group that fosters and celebrates the creative community in urban spaces.
  • Goal: Communicate a sense of collaboration & creativity. Ability to append a city in a different color – we could use the 3 digit code for cities to keep the design simple.
  • Voice:Friendly, inviting, communicative. Bring in a little of what you are feeling today.
  • Audience: Designers, architects, and anyone inspired by design
  • Guidelines: Minimal, clean, easy to read, easy to enlarge or reduce in size.
  • Colours: Use any colors at all. The current site does not reflect anything we are necessarily invested in.

Get RTI

  • Brand: An open source platform that brings transparency to Right To Information act submissions and returns. The platform enables anyone to easily search through thousands of RTI requests to find patterns, reuse data, and create citizen engagement.
  • Goal: The site is content/data heavy. The logo should not take away from the content. The logo should convey a sense of empowerment, transparency of government. Users who see it should feel a sense of trustworthiness in the system.
  • Voice: Approachable, confident, honest
  • Audience: A large range of people! Anyone who files or is looking for RTI filings, government officials, activists.
  • Guidelines: Easy to understand. The logo will sit in the top toolbar which is currently 80px high. Can be increased in height if required, but not too much because of space limitations caused by content,
  • Colours: Our current palette is below, however we are not invested in it and are willing to change. Stay away from nationalistic colours like orange/green.

Feb 22nd: Logo Love

NOTE: This was originally scheduled for Feb 8th. Due to The Goa Project & Meta Refresh on subsequent weekend in February we have postponed it.

Join us for an evening with Sandeep Dev  for a workshop on logo design.

We’ll be learning about the basics of logo design and then iterating on some designs for local, community driven projects.

We kicked off 2014 on Saturday, Jan 11th by spending an afternoon designing solutions for getRTI, an open source platform that brings transparency to Right To Information act submissions and returns. The platform enables anyone to easily search through thousands of RTI requests to find patterns, reuse data, and create citizen engagement.

The design challenge

The getRTI team had a request for Design Evenings: Be able to visualize the content and patterns found in the RTI file repository.

HOW THE EVENT PROCEEDED

Step 1: Introductions & present the design challenge

StakeholdersRakesh Reddy Dubudu and Harish Krishnan from the getRTI were on hand to explain the design challenge to us. They talked about the current problem, where they are with the getRTI project, and then answered many questions about the user persona, data available, technology limitations, and more.

Step 2: Split into teams & brainstorm

The group then split up into three smaller teams, to iterate and brainstorm through solutions. We had a handy buzzer to keep folks on track. Chai, chips, and osmania biscuits kept the group moving forward. The whiteboards and various writing surfaced helped too :)

Step 3: Reconvene and share ideas

We reconvened the entire group to share their respective ideas. The rest offered suggestions, had questions, and we then we continued to iterate through the design solutions.

Step 4:   1-UP it!

Based on all the feedback, we created detailed wireframes and notes for each of the solutions.

Outcomes

At the end of 3 hours, we had 5 distinct solutions for the problem.

Finals-3 Finals

Finals-2We made a “grand show” of presenting these to Harish, one of the stakeholders & architects behind the getRTI solution :)

Next Steps

Some of us from Design Evenings are now getting involved in iterating through the solutions more based on user feedback and finally will help the team implement the solution. Send us an email if you still have questions or are interested in getting involved!

Join us at Devthon on Jan 18 & 19, where innovators and developers will move the ideas forward.

Resources

For the evening we used a combination of gamestorming, ideas from IDEO Design thinking crash course, and other thoughts on creative facilitation to keep the agenda on track and discover concrete solutions in 3 hours.

Hello 2014!

2014.. here we go!

Things are brewing nicely for 2014!

  • getRTI design workshop: getRTI is both a crowd-sourced public repository of all RTI data and a filing platform, built with love in Hyderabad. The getRTI team will join us on Jan 11th for a brainstorming session on improving the usability of their application.
  • Logo love workshop: Join the creative crew from 17dNorth as they walk us through the ins & outs of logo design. This will be followed by iterating through some designs for local open source software or community programmes (proposals welcome!)

So, we hope you join us in 2014!

2013 roundup

Hyderabad Design Evenings came together one fine afternoon in Hyderabad at the lovely Lamakaan. The idea was formulated through several meetings of the Hyderabad UI Design & Dev group that was formed earlier in the year.

There seemed to be a general consensus that there wasn’t a community  that celebrated the vibrant and growing Hyderabad creatives or a space where we could come together and collaborate on new projects that would make the city and the products we make better.

After several meetings at Lamakaan we realized that we needed a more workshop type of space where we could brainstorm & collaborate on design solutions. Farhan came through with the most wonderful Hyderabad Liberal Arts Institute space. This space is perfectly suited for design evenings, with lot’s of light, many writing surfaces for collaboration, and pretty much all the low-tech and high-tech solutions needed for brainstorming.

Our first event here we collaborated on improving bus transportation signage for the city, a project proposed by Harsha Devulapalli from Hyderabad Urban Lab.
